A four-year study shows that cannabis for chronic non-cancer pain is safe and effective.

Dr. Mark Ware of McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), Quebec Pain Research Network and Canadian Consortium for the Investigation of Cannabinoids led the first national study of the long term safety of medical cannabis use by patients suffering from chronic pain.

The study followed 215 medical cannabis patients with non-cancer chronic pain and compared them to a control group of 216 chronic pain sufferers who were not using cannabis.

The main conclusion after four years? “Quality-controlled herbal cannabis, when used by cannabis-experienced patients as part of a monitored treatment program over one year, appears to have a reasonable safety profile.” We’re not surprised.
